Nomura International plc (NIP), our UK subsidiary, was awarded the Chairman's Cup at the City of London 2012 Clean City Awards. With over 1,600 sites participating in the awards scheme Nomura received the Premier Award for Angel Lane, the company's new London headquarters. This scheme was launched in 1994 by the City of London and aims to develop partnerships with City businesses by raising the profile of responsible waste management, recognizing and rewarding good practice by encouraging businesses to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Since first participating in 2002, NIP has received the platinum and gold award for Nomura House, the company's former London headquarters. It also received the platinum award for Angel Lane in 2010 and 2011. Nomura was commended for its initiatives to reduce consumables and waste, such as the reward scheme for employees who use crockery rather than disposable containers and for the environmental awareness initiatives to engage stakeholders, including staff, vendors and clients through a number of road shows, events, training webcasts and webinars.

NIP has also introduced a large kitchen garden on the roof and volunteers from the office have signed up to the horticultural network to help grow sustainable food produce. This has reduced the amount of food deliveries and the associated packaging and pallet waste as the food grown on the roof is used in client dining facilities. Coffee grounds from the café are used as compost* on the kitchen garden and egg shells are used as a method of pest control thus removing further waste from the kitchen.

Nomura is working to lower its overall environmental impact based on our Environmental Statement and Environmental Policy. We will continue to enhance our environmental management efforts and information disclosure by collaborating closely across our global network.
