Kyoto University and Nomura Establish Research DivisionKyoto/Tokyo, September 10, 2007 – Kyoto University and Nomura Holdings, Inc. today announced plans to establish the Division for Mathematical Analysis and Finance in Kyoto University endowed by Nomura Group in commemoration of the 2006 Gauss Prize awarded to Dr. Kiyosi Itô, professor emeritus at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) in Kyoto University and one of the founders of stochastic analysis. The new research division (KIMF)1 will operate for three years from October 1, 2007, to September 30, 2010. KIMF will promote research and development in the areas of quantitative finance and mathematical finance while contributing to the inter-connection of finance and high level mathematical science expertise. Since 2001, Kyoto University and Nomura Group have been jointly running the Research Section for Applications of Financial Engineering (KIER) as a section of the Institute of Economic Research, Kyoto University. The research section has conducted a wide range of research activities such as inviting visiting professors, providing regular or intensive lecture courses, conducting joint research, organizing symposiums, and publishing books in the fields of financial engineering and education. In addition to this experience, RIMS is one of the world's leading institutes for mathematical analysis and Kyoto University and Nomura Group expect KIMF to be a key research section in both finance and mathematical analysis, including related fields, to invite talented researchers from around the world and conduct research, development, and education. Specific activities planned for KIMF include lectures on stochastic analysis for Kyoto University students to encourage their understanding of financial engineering, and the development of cutting-edge research via open symposiums and scientific workshops. *1 |
