Human Rights
Fundamental Approach
Nomura has established various mechanisms to prevent discrimination and harassment, in accordance with the Nomura Group Code of Conduct.
Our standards are aligned with international human rights principles. As a member of the UN Global Compact, we support the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, the ILO's international labor standards and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The Nomura Group Sustainability Statement outlines our commitment to addressing social issues including human rights issues.
Addressing Human Rights Issues
We believe it is important to not only encourage the financing of new business activities that contribute to solving ESG issues, but also to engage with the businesses that we are already providing investments and loans to, in order to encourage them to participate in the realization and further advance towards a more sustainable society.
We recognize that not only our own business activities, but also the activities of our stakeholders have potential to negatively impact human rights and other social issues. To mitigate such impacts we will strive to respond responsibly and respect not only the laws and regulations of each country concerned, but also international human rights standards. In particular, we will for example avoid providing finance to business activities related to cluster bombs, due to concerns over their characterization as inhumane, and business activities utilizing child and forced labor.
Supplier
Nomura Group outsources various operations to outside providers. In order to fulfill our social responsibility, we are requesting our outsourced service providers to understand the purpose of the Nomura Group Code of Conduct and act in accordance with it.
To ensure that we manage our suppliers appropriately, we have in place procurement regulations to guide our transactions with external vendors. In selecting suppliers, we confirm their suitability as transaction partners, and conduct prior screening based on prescribed procedures.
We have developed a set of Supplier CSR Guidelines, which outlines our CSR requirements when doing business with suppliers. These guidelines are consistent with the global standard embodied in the UN Global Compact, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
Suppliers who provide products and services to the Nomura Group are expected to understand and share our philosophy on preventing corruption, child labor and respecting human rights as expressed in our CSR Supplier Guidelines, as well as adhere to the Nomura Group Code of Conduct.
Employees
To ensure that the dignity of all employees is protected, we have set up the Nomura Group Human Rights Committee to determine human rights initiatives and share information across the group from its secretariat.
Modern Slavery Act Statements
We publish our Modern Slavery Act Statement annually to ensure that slavery and human trafficking are not taking place in our business or supply chain. This is in accordance with the requirements of the UK Modern Slavery Act.
Efforts to Resolve Human Rights Issues through Multi-stakeholder Dialogues
We have been a part of Global Compact Network Japan's Human Rights Due Diligence Working Group since 2016. At the working group, we discuss various themes related to human rights due diligence processes with experts and exchange information with other members.
In addition, we participated in the Nippon CSR Consortium for two years from 2012. The consortium looks at human rights issues through dialogue with a broad range of stakeholders.
We took part in the consortium's Human Rights Due Diligence Workshop, and participated in discussions regarding human rights issues that companies should be aware of and consider addressing.
Together with other companies, NPOs and NGOs, various experts and other stakeholders, we reviewed major human rights issues affecting each industry, and talked about the importance of each issue and what measures need to be taken. These discussions helped deepen our understanding of key human rights issues.
Nomura Group is committed to implementing initiatives to address human rights issues.
Stakeholder Feedback
We offer various avenues for clients to provide feedback or express concerns or complaints, including our dedicated call center and website. Employees may also register their concerns through a number of internal and external channels. Through ongoing dialogue with our stakeholders, we will continue working to respond to the demands of society. We will also regularly disclose the initiatives implemented in light of the feedback received.
