"Sakura Project" April 2016 -Nomura Employees Plant Cherry Blossom Trees in Disaster-Stricken Areas
Since 2012, Nomura has been supporting the "Mt. Tohana Cherry Blossom Association", a local group striving to make Tohanayama Hill in Yamamoto Town, Watari District, Miyagi Prefecture, a notable cherry blossom ("sakura") viewing spot. Nomura employees have made donations to purchase cherry blossom tree saplings and employee volunteers from across the country gather twice a year to plant trees, help with environmental protection of the mountain and support maintenance of the mountain paths. Bakke-Yaki (Bakke Ware)
Nomura has been supporting the areas affected by the earthquake. One form of support is our participation in the New Tohoku Business Reconstruction Contest, which aims to revive industries in that region. In 2015, the Nomura Securities Award was presented to the Bakke-Yaki Hiro Kiln in recognition of the historic value of this age-old tradition and efforts to preserve it.
Nomura Supports SDGs for School
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a call to action to end poverty, promote gender equality, protect the planet and realize a more sustainable future for all. Nomura is proud to support NPO Think the Earth’s SDGs for School project in its efforts to educate students at levels about SDGs and encourage them to play an active role in creating a sustainable world.

Towards the Development of Sustainable Finance
In January 2018, Nomura established a dedicated ESG research group comprising experts from industry, government and academia. For approximately a year, the group conducted research on the sustainable development of the ESG bond market. Dr. Takeshi Mizuguchi, Professor at Takasaki City University of Economics, served as chairman of the group. He shares with us what significance sustainable finance holds for issuers and investors and the role financial institutions are expected to play.
Financial and Economic Education: Manabow Class
Our Manabow class was launched in the 1990s as part of Nomura's ongoing efforts to enhance financial and economic literacy among young people. Our employees visit elementary schools throughout Japan to teach children about currencies, exchange rates, the impact of a strong or weak yen and much more through fun, engaging games. Through our financial and economic education initiatives, we are working to improve financial literacy as well as contribute to the creation of an affluent society.

Summer Kids Event 2022
Nomura's Summer Kids Event is back! After going virtual for a year, the event returned in-person in Otemachi, Tokyo on August 5, 2022. This is part of Nomura's financial and economic education program and is for employees' children and families.

Sakura Project, April 2024
Since 2012, Nomura has been working with the Mt. Tohana Sakura Association to make Mt. Tohana in Watari District, Miyagi Prefecture, a popular cherry blossom viewing spot. Watari District suffered severe damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011. Over 2,000 cherry blossom trees have been planted on Mt. Tohana. Nomura has planted 622 of these trees, including 513 donated by our employees. Nomura visits Mt. Tohana twice a year to maintain the mountain path, build steps and help with the upkeep of the area. More than 1,100 Nomura employees have participated in this project to date.
